JSW’s first SUV will beat Tata-Mahindra: Plug-in hybrid car with over 1000km range; launching by Diwali

The automobile company of the country’s largest industrial house, the JSW Group, is preparing to launch its first vehicle. The company has filed a design patent for its upcoming SUV in India. This new SUV will be based on the Jetour T2 model from the Chinese company Chery.

Just last week, the company released a teaser for this vehicle to dealers. According to reports, JSW Motors is expected to launch it around Diwali 2026.

The patent was filed in December and approved in February.

The design patent for this SUV was filed by Chery Automobile on December 18, 2025, and was approved on February 27, 2026. The patent clearly indicates that this JSW SUV coming to India will have a similar look to the Jetour T2 sold in the global market.

While the international model has ‘JETOUR’ written on the grille, in India, ‘JSW’ branding can be seen here.

Design: Muscular Look and Boxy Styling

The design patent appears to confirm much of what the teaser hinted at. JSW Motors will make very minor changes to the Jetour T2’s boxy and rugged styling. The front features square LED headlights, connected by a black trim piece.

It also features a honeycomb-patterned grille. Its muscular bumper features a single fog lamp and two pairs of Pixel DRL clusters on either side. The hood is prominently sculpted, with grab handles on both sides.

Looking at the side, the design patent shows side mirrors mounted on the doors, which is interesting since previous teasers showed these mirrors attached to the A-pillars. The gap between the roof rails is also slightly different compared to the international model.

Everything else, such as the alloy wheels, wheel cladding, and window lines, remains the same. Images of the rear of this model haven’t surfaced, but the rest of the design is barely any different from the global model.

Powertrain: Hybrid engine with excellent range

JSW Motors will offer the ‘i-DM’ (plug-in hybrid) version of the SUV in India. It will be powered by a combination of a petrol engine and a battery.

  • Engine: The plug-in hybrid car will be powered by a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine that produces 156 hp and is powered by a 26.7 kWh battery pack.
  • Range: The car can travel up to 139 km in electric mode only, while its total range on petrol and battery will exceed 1000 km.
  • Performance: The global model produces 381hp and 610Nm of torque, but this may vary depending on Indian roads and mileage.

It will be assembled at a plant in Maharashtra and could cost ₹15 lakh.

JSW Motors will assemble this SUV at its plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Market experts estimate its ex-showroom price could be around ₹15 lakh. It will compete with vehicles like the Tata Harrier, Safari, and Mahindra XUV700.
